Ranch Roads and Driveways Around Austin
The road work we do around Austin is on acreage outside the city, not on city lots. Long private drives off the FM roads in southwest Travis County, access across places out 290 East and 71, and ranch roads on land north up 183.
Which side of the Balcones Fault you are on decides the build. West of MoPac you are on limestone with thin soil, which gives you a subgrade that carries load and costs you money whenever grade has to come down through rock. East of I-35 you are on blackland clay, which digs easily and then behaves badly if you do not respect it. Clay under a road holds water, softens and pumps into ruts. It has to be stripped, shaped, compacted and crowned, and it needs base on top if anything heavy will use the road.
Upstream development is the third factor. A lot of Travis County acreage now catches runoff off rooftops and pavement that did not exist a decade ago. Culverts sized for the old condition get overwhelmed, and the road goes with them. We size for what is coming now.
We are about an hour west in Johnson City, so equipment moves to this side of the county are short.
Ranch Road and Driveway Services We Provide in Austin, TX
Customized road construction solutions for ranches, farms, recreational properties, and acreages.
New Ranch Roads
Cut, shaped, based and crowned so the road sheds water and carries a truck and trailer year round.
Road Repair and Resurfacing
Ruts, washouts and roads that lost their crown. Usually cheaper to rebuild what is there than start over.
Driveways and Entrances
From the county road to the house or barn, built with a proper base and an entrance that drains.
Culverts and Low Water Crossings
Pipe sized to the draw it is crossing, and rock crossings where a creek actually runs.
Cattle Guards
Set level with the road surface, with wings and approaches built so nothing washes out around them.
What Separates a Road From a Rut
The difference between a road you drive for fifteen years and one you regrade every spring comes down to three things, and material is not one of them.
Shape. The surface has to be crowned so water leaves it. Flat means water sits, the subgrade softens and traffic works it into ruts. It is free to do at build time and expensive to fix later.
Drainage that goes somewhere. Crown moves water to the edge, ditches carry it away, culverts take it under the road where a draw crosses. All three have to work together. A ditch that dead ends is not drainage.
A subgrade that was actually built. Stripping the topsoil and compacting what is underneath is the step that gets skipped, because nobody can see it once the job is finished. It is also the step that decides whether the road holds.
We build in that order every time, then put material on top only where the ground needs it. On a lot of jobs that is less hauled rock than people expect, and the road lasts longer.
What Road Work Costs
Road work goes on a day rate most of the time. That covers the machine, the operator, fuel and getting equipment to your place. We price it that way because until we cut into a road route nobody knows how deep the soft ground goes or how much rock is in the way, and a contractor forced to guarantee a number on that will build the worst case into it whether it happens or not.
Where a run is measured and the scope is clear, we will bid it firm. A known length of driveway to a set width, a culvert install at a specific crossing, a cattle guard set at a fence line. Those get a number before we start.
What moves the price on a road is how much material has to be hauled in, how far it travels, whether we are cutting through rock, and how many places water crosses the route. We tell you which of those apply after we have driven it with you.
Our Ranch Road Construction Process

We Drive the Route
We walk or drive where the road is going, look at the low spots, and find where water crosses it.

We Set the Grade
Where it climbs, where it drains, where a culvert goes. Worked out before a machine moves.

We Cut and Base It
Topsoil stripped, subgrade shaped and compacted, then base material where the ground will not carry a load on its own.

We Crown and Ditch It
The surface gets crowned so water runs off it, and the ditches get cut so that water has somewhere to go.

Why Choose Us for Ranch Road Construction in Austin, TX?
Roads Are Our Bread and Butter
We build and rebuild them constantly across thirteen counties. The failures teach you more than the successes.

A road that does not drain will not last, whatever you spend on material. Drainage is the first decision we make.
Whatever the Ground Needs
Sometimes caliche, sometimes hauled base, sometimes just reshaping and compacting what is already there.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you work inside Austin city limits?
Rarely. Tree protection, land development rules and tight access make small city lots a poor fit for what we do. Our road work is on acreage outside the city.
Is a clay driveway going to hold up?
It will if it is built right. Blackland has to be stripped, compacted and crowned so water leaves the surface, with base on top if heavy vehicles are using it. Clay that stays wet under traffic turns to ruts every time.
What changes west of MoPac?
Rock. The subgrade is usually solid, which is free structure, but any grade that has to be cut through limestone means hammer work and that is priced by the day.
Can you fix a drive that floods where it meets the road?
Usually. That is a culvert or entrance grading problem, where road ditch water has nowhere to go but down your driveway. It is a common and fixable complaint.
Do I need a permit for a new driveway entrance?
For a new tie in to a county road, often yes, and floodplain or Edwards recharge zone rules may apply depending on where you are. We will tell you what we think applies before we start.
