Road Building Around Dripping Springs
Most of the road work we do around Dripping Springs is long private drives on acreage off 290 and the FM roads, running a few hundred yards from the gate back to a house. Those are worth building properly because you drive them every single day and because rebuilding one is a lot more expensive than doing it right.
The ground here is thin soil over limestone. Where the rock is close, you get a subgrade that carries weight without much help, which saves money. Where the grade has to come down through it, you are into hammer work, which does not. Test cuts along the route tell us which one you have before anybody quotes.
Water is the other consideration. This ground sheds fast once rain comes off the rock, and the draws that look dry eleven months of the year will move real water in May. Every place a road crosses one of those is a culvert decision, and undersizing it is what takes roads out around here.
Some of this area sits over the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone, which can bring additional requirements for earthwork depending on the site and the scale. We will flag it if it applies to yours.

Complete road and driveway solutions developed to meet the needs of residential, rural, and agricultural properties.
New Ranch Roads
A new road cut from scratch. Route walked first, base where the ground needs it, crown so water leaves the surface.
Road Repair and Resurfacing
Bringing an old road back. Reshape the crown, fix the drainage, add material where it has worn through.
Driveways and Entrances
The stretch you drive every day. Built to hold up under a truck and to keep the county road water out of your place.
Culverts and Low Water Crossings
Where a road meets water, the pipe or the crossing has to be sized for what actually comes through.
Cattle Guards
Installed flush with the road, set on a proper base, with approaches graded so they do not wash.
What Makes a Ranch Road Last
Almost every failed road we get called out to look at failed for one of three reasons, and none of them is the material on top.
No crown. A road graded flat holds water in the middle of it. That water soaks into the subgrade, the subgrade goes soft, and traffic pumps it into ruts. A road needs a hump down the centre so water runs off the surface within a few feet. It costs nothing extra to build and it is the single biggest thing that decides how long a road lasts.
Nowhere for the water to go. A crown only helps if there is a ditch to receive the water and somewhere for the ditch to drain. Ditches that dead end into a rise just move the problem twenty feet.
Base laid on soft ground. Hauling in material and spreading it over ground that was never stripped and compacted is money on the floor. It sinks in, gets contaminated with the mud underneath, and within a season you cannot tell it was ever there.
We build from the bottom. Strip the topsoil and organic material, shape and compact the subgrade, add base where the native ground will not carry the load, then crown and ditch. On some jobs the native material reshaped and compacted properly outperforms a cheap load of caliche dumped on top of nothing.
Straight Pricing on Road Work
We charge a day rate for most road building, covering machine, operator, fuel and getting there. Roads have more unknowns in them than almost anything else we do, because you cannot see the subgrade until you open it and you do not know how much pipe you need until you have walked every draw.
Defined work gets a fixed number. A measured stretch of driveway, a specific crossing, a cattle guard. Those we can quote before the trailer rolls.
Four things swing the cost of a road. How much material has to come in, how far it hauls, whether there is rock in the way, and how many times the route crosses water. We name whichever apply to your job before we start, not on the invoice.
Our Road Construction Steps

Walk It First
Nothing gets quoted off an aerial. We look at the ground, the grade and every place water crosses the route.

Plan the Drainage
Drainage decides whether the road lasts. Culverts, ditches and crown all get worked out before we start.

Build the Subgrade
Strip the soft stuff, shape it, compact it. Base material goes on top of something solid or it does not help.

Shape and Finish
Crown cut, ditches pulled, approaches tied in, and we drive it with you before we leave.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a long private driveway cost?
It depends on length, how much material has to be hauled, and whether there is rock in the cut. Open ended work goes on a day rate. A measured run at a set width can be bid firm. We walk it and tell you which.
Is limestone a problem for road building?
Not usually, and often it helps. Rock near the surface makes a solid base you do not have to build. It only costs you money when the grade has to come down through it and a hammer comes out.
How do you decide culvert size?
By how much ground drains into the crossing. It is a judgment based on the watershed above it, not a standard pipe we use everywhere. Undersized pipe is the most common reason a road washes out here.
Do recharge zone rules affect road work?
They can, depending on the site and how much ground is being disturbed. It is worth knowing before you plan the route. We will raise it if it looks like it applies to your property.
Can you resurface a drive that has gone rough?
Yes, and that is often the better spend. If the subgrade underneath is sound we reshape the crown, fix the drainage and add material where it has worn through, rather than rebuilding from scratch.
