Building Pads on Lockhart Blackland

lake excavation

Blackland clay is the most demanding ground we build pads on, and it is not because it is weak. It carries plenty of weight when it is dry. The problem is that it swells when it takes water and shrinks when it dries, and that movement is what cracks slabs.

Building against it means controlling moisture in the fill, compacting in lifts rather than dumping and levelling, and getting the finished grade to shed water well away from the structure so the clay underneath stays at a stable moisture instead of cycling wet and dry at the slab edge.

Timing matters too. Wet blackland will not compact properly and it tears the site up getting equipment in. Late summer through winter is the window.

Services Included in Our Site Preparation Solutions

Texas Grading provides a variety of site preparation services that help property owners create project-ready conditions. We work to improve site functionality and prepare land for future construction, development, and improvement plans.

House Pads

Cut, filled and compacted to a set size and elevation. Graded so nothing drains toward the structure.

Barn, Shop and Barndominium Pads

Larger pads for metal buildings, built with the same compaction and drainage as a house pad.

Grading to Plan

Working to staked elevations for a builder, or by eye for a barn. Whichever the job needs.

Leveling Uneven Ground

Cut the high, fill the low, compact the fill. Usable ground where there was a slope.

Getting the Water Right

Fall away from the structure on all sides, and somewhere for that water to actually go.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do slabs crack on blackland?

Because the clay under them swells and shrinks with moisture. Consistent moisture is what prevents it, and that comes from proper fill, compaction and drainage.

On anything carrying real weight it usually helps. Select fill over a compacted clay subgrade rides the movement better than clay alone.

Late summer through winter. Wet blackland will not compact and you tear up the property getting equipment to the site.

Yes. Getting water away from the structure is part of building the pad, not an add on.
