Rules Worth Checking Before You Build Around Elgin

1/4 acre pond construction in Bastrop, Texas by Texas Grading, completed in 2 days

The permitting side of an Elgin pond is usually short. Impounding water for livestock and domestic use on your own acreage is allowed under Texas law without a water right, and a stock tank is nowhere near the size that brings TCEQ dam safety rules into it.

Elgin straddles the Bastrop and Travis county line area, so the first thing to establish is which county your parcel actually sits in, because the floodplain permitting office is different. Wherever you are, if the site falls in a mapped flood hazard area along one of the creeks, that means a development permit before earthwork.

On flat farmland the neighbor question matters more than the county question. Changing where runoff leaves your place can push water onto the property next door. We plan the outfall so water keeps going where it already went.

Ag and wildlife valuation goes to the appraisal district for your county, Bastrop Central or Travis Central depending on which side of the line you are on. Call them before you build if the pond is part of the plan.

Pond Building Around Elgin

Elgin sits where the sandy country to the east runs into the blackland to the west, and you can catch either one depending on which side of town you are on. Out toward McDade and Paige it gets sandy. Toward Manor and Coupland it turns to heavy dark clay. Both hold water, they just get built differently.

On the clay side the job is simple. The material seals itself, the dam builds out of what comes from the hole, and a quarter acre tank goes in over two or three days. On the sandy side we dig until we find the clay layer underneath and build the pond in that instead.

What is consistent around Elgin is that this is flat country. Flat means the dam does not have to be tall, which keeps the cost down, but it also means you have to be deliberate about where the water comes from. A pond on flat ground with no real watershed feeding it will sit half empty most of the year no matter how well it was built. We walk the drainage before we pick the spot, looking for where water already collects after a rain.

Most of what we build out here is stock tanks and half acre ponds on hay ground and grazing land off 290 and the county roads north and south of it. There is still a lot of working agriculture around Elgin and a pond on those places is a working piece of equipment, not a decoration.

What We Build Around Elgin

We dig ponds on ranches, hobby farms and acreage all over the Elgin area. Quarter acre stock tanks up to multi acre lakes, plus expansions and cleanouts on ponds you already have.

Stock Tanks & Ranch Ponds

The working tank. Eight foot center depth, banks graded to hold their shape, placed where the runoff already goes.

Lake Excavation

Bigger water for property that can feed it. We size the dam and the spillway to the country draining in.

Pond Cleanout & Rehab

Twenty years of silt pulled out, banks reshaped and the dam checked. The site has already proved it holds water.

What a Good Pond Does for a Place Out Here

On rural acreage a pond does work before it does anything decorative. It is stock water, it is fire water, it is wildlife habitat, and it is rainfall that stays on your side of the fence. It also happens to be the thing every buyer walks straight toward.

This is an estimator, not a quote. It figures the dirt you would move for a bowl shaped pond at the size, depth and bank slope you picked. What you actually pay depends on whether we hit rock, what shape the ground is in, how far we have to haul spoil, and whether the spot needs clearing first. Rock is the big one. If we run into granite or solid limestone we have to bring a hammer out and that gets billed by the day. Call us and we will come walk it.

What Our Customers Say

★★★★★

“This is the second time using this company. And always quick responses and follow through! Their quality of work is the best in the industry. I’ve reached out to other companies before and usually slow to respond and set a date to come look at the property for a project and no show. That is something you won’t have to worry about by going with Texas Grading.”

Sean Chandler

★★★★★

“Worked with me to get my pond exactly how I wanted it. Taylor communicated well and was willing to cut me a fair deal when things weren’t exactly as expected. Jonathon is an ace with the dozer. The man can move some dirt like icing on a cake. Well done gentlemen!”

Dennis Pacl

★★★★★

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Elgin soil clay or sand?

Both, depending where. West and north of town it runs to blackland clay. East toward McDade it gets sandy. We dig test holes to find out what is under your specific spot.

We have not needed one out here. On the clay side the ground seals on its own. On the sandy side we dig down to the clay and build in that. If a pond does not hold we come back with bentonite, but that is rare around Elgin.

We walk it and look at where water already goes after a rain. Contours, existing draws, and what the grass tells you. On flat ground around Elgin this matters more than the size of the pond.

Around $23,000 to start at eight foot center depth with four to one banks. Flat ground and no rock keep Elgin jobs close to that number.

Late summer through winter, when the clay has dried enough to work. Wet blackland is slow and it tears up the pasture getting to the job.
