Road Building Around Luling
Luling ground runs to blackland clay with sandier pockets closer to the San Marcos River, and roads have to be built for whichever one they cross. Clay needs crown and drainage above everything else, because wet clay carries nothing. Sandier ground needs base material because it will not hold a load on its own.
The specific thing about Caldwell County is what is already under the ground. This is old oil field country and there are buried lines, capped wells, tank battery pads and easements across a lot of these properties, some of it not visible from the surface and not always where the records say. Before we cut a new road route we would rather see whatever plats, surveys or title documents you have than find something with a bucket.
Timing is the other practical issue. There are stretches in the spring where the ground will not carry equipment without tearing up your place, and pushing through them costs more and leaves a mess. We will tell you when waiting is the better call.
Most of what we build here is working access on grazing ground, so we build for feed trucks and trailers rather than for a pickup.

New Ranch Roads
New access cut across your place. Base material where it is needed, crown and ditch so it sheds water.
Road Repair and Resurfacing
A road that has gone soft or lost its shape, reworked so it drains and carries weight again.
Driveways and Entrances
Built for a loaded truck and a wet week, not just for a Saturday in July.
Culverts and Low Water Crossings
Culverts through the road bed and rock crossings at the creek, both sized for real runoff.
Cattle Guards
Placed flush and level, with the road built up to it so there is no lip and no washout.
How a Road That Holds Up Gets Built
A ranch road is not a layer of rock on the ground. It is a shaped, compacted structure, and the part that does the work is the part you cannot see.
The subgrade carries the load. Topsoil and organic material get stripped off, because that stuff holds water and never compacts properly. What is left gets shaped to grade and compacted. Everything above depends on this being right.
Base goes where it earns its keep. On some ground the native material, properly compacted, carries a truck fine. On soft or sandy ground it will not, and that is where hauled material pays for itself. We use caliche, base rock, recycled material or what is already there, depending on the road and what will be driving on it.
The crown and the ditch do the rest. Water off the surface fast, into a ditch, and away. Where the road crosses a draw, a culvert sized for what actually runs through it, or a rock crossing where the creek runs often enough to justify one.
None of it is complicated. All of it gets skipped by somebody quoting a cheap number.
Straight Pricing on Road Work
We charge a day rate for most road building, covering machine, operator, fuel and getting there. Roads have more unknowns in them than almost anything else we do, because you cannot see the subgrade until you open it and you do not know how much pipe you need until you have walked every draw.
Defined work gets a fixed number. A measured stretch of driveway, a specific crossing, a cattle guard. Those we can quote before the trailer rolls.
Four things swing the cost of a road. How much material has to come in, how far it hauls, whether there is rock in the way, and how many times the route crosses water. We name whichever apply to your job before we start, not on the invoice.
Our Ranch Road Construction Process

Look at the Water
The first question on any road is where water goes when it rains. Everything else follows from that.

Set the Line and Grade
Route, grade and crossings decided on the ground, with an eye on what you will be hauling over it.

Cut, Fill and Compact
Subgrade built to carry the load, with base hauled in where the native material will not hold up.

Crown, Ditch, Drive It
Finished surface crowned and ditched, then driven and checked before the equipment comes off.
Improving Property Function with Quality Road Construction
Well-built road systems improve movement throughout the property while supporting future development, safer travel, and long-term accessibility for every landowner.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you need to know about old oil field infrastructure?
It helps a great deal. Old lines, capped wells and easements are common around Luling and not always obvious. If you have plats, surveys or a title report showing easements, we want to look before we dig.
How do you build a road that survives wet clay?
Crown it hard so water leaves the surface, ditch it so the water has somewhere to go, and put base on top of a compacted subgrade if anything heavy will use it.
Can you build a road down to the river bottom?
Yes, and it has to be built knowing water will be over it sometimes. Access and drainage decide the price on bottomland roads more than anything else.
When is the best time of year?
Late summer through winter. Spring can leave blackland too wet to work without rutting your pasture on the way to the job.
Do you fix roads as well as build them?
Yes, and on an existing route it is usually cheaper. Reshape the crown, pull the ditches, fix the crossings, add material where it is thin.
