Road Work Around Elgin

Road Building Process

Elgin sits where sandy country to the east runs into blackland to the west, and a road built for one will not perform on the other. On the sandy side the problem is that nothing carries load, so you build structure with base over a compacted subgrade. On the clay side the material will carry weight when it is dry and turns to soup when it is not, so the whole game is keeping water off the surface.

Both answers involve a properly built subgrade and a real crown. What changes is how much base you need and how hard you have to work on drainage.

This is flat country, which sounds like it should make roads easy and does the opposite. Flat ground gives water nowhere obvious to go, so ditches have to be cut with enough fall to actually drain and they have to discharge somewhere real. A ditch that dead ends into a rise is not drainage, it is a pond next to your road.

A lot of the road work we do around Elgin is on hay and grazing ground where trucks and trailers are moving through gates regularly. That traffic decides how the road gets built.

Ranch Road and Driveway Services for Elgin, TX Properties

Practical road and driveway solutions designed for ranches, farms, homes, commercial properties, and large acreage.

New Ranch Roads

Cut, shaped, based and crowned so the road sheds water and carries a truck and trailer year round.

Road Repair and Resurfacing

Ruts, washouts and roads that lost their crown. Usually cheaper to rebuild what is there than start over.

Driveways and Entrances

From the county road to the house or barn, built with a proper base and an entrance that drains.

Culverts and Low Water Crossings

Pipe sized to the draw it is crossing, and rock crossings where a creek actually runs.

Cattle Guards

Set level with the road surface, with wings and approaches built so nothing washes out around them.

What Separates a Road From a Rut

Road Building Process

The difference between a road you drive for fifteen years and one you regrade every spring comes down to three things, and material is not one of them.

Shape. The surface has to be crowned so water leaves it. Flat means water sits, the subgrade softens and traffic works it into ruts. It is free to do at build time and expensive to fix later.

Drainage that goes somewhere. Crown moves water to the edge, ditches carry it away, culverts take it under the road where a draw crosses. All three have to work together. A ditch that dead ends is not drainage.

A subgrade that was actually built. Stripping the topsoil and compacting what is underneath is the step that gets skipped, because nobody can see it once the job is finished. It is also the step that decides whether the road holds.

We build in that order every time, then put material on top only where the ground needs it. On a lot of jobs that is less hauled rock than people expect, and the road lasts longer.

Straight Pricing on Road Work

Road Building Process

We charge a day rate for most road building, covering machine, operator, fuel and getting there. Roads have more unknowns in them than almost anything else we do, because you cannot see the subgrade until you open it and you do not know how much pipe you need until you have walked every draw.

Defined work gets a fixed number. A measured stretch of driveway, a specific crossing, a cattle guard. Those we can quote before the trailer rolls.

Four things swing the cost of a road. How much material has to come in, how far it hauls, whether there is rock in the way, and how many times the route crosses water. We name whichever apply to your job before we start, not on the invoice.

Our Road Building Approach

Look at the Water

The first question on any road is where water goes when it rains. Everything else follows from that.

Elevation analysis step icon

Set the Line and Grade

Route, grade and crossings decided on the ground, with an eye on what you will be hauling over it.

Rough grading step icon

Cut, Fill and Compact

Subgrade built to carry the load, with base hauled in where the native material will not hold up.

Final leveling step icon

Crown, Ditch, Drive It

Finished surface crowned and ditched, then driven and checked before the equipment comes off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you build differently on the sandy side versus the clay side?

Yes. Sand needs base material to carry any load. Clay will carry weight when dry but has to be crowned hard so water leaves the surface fast. We check which one your route is on before quoting.

Clay holding water on the surface, most likely, with no crown to shed it and no ditch to take it away. Fixing that is usually cheaper than resurfacing, and resurfacing without fixing it is wasted money.

Yes, but the ditches have to be cut with real fall and they have to discharge somewhere. Flat ground makes drainage harder, not easier.

Late summer through winter on the clay side, when the ground is workable. Wet blackland is slow, expensive and hard on the pasture getting equipment in.

Yes. Flush with the road surface, on a proper base, with the approaches graded so they do not wash out at the edges.
