Is Luling ground good for a pond?
On the blackland side it is very good. Nearer the river it gets sandier and we dig down to find clay. Either way we test hole before we quote.
What is the best time of year to build?
Late summer through winter. Spring around here can leave the ground too wet to work without tearing up the pasture, and the job takes longer and costs more when it is soupy.
Do you need to know about old oil field infrastructure?
It helps. Caldwell County has a lot of history under the ground. Old lines and capped wells are not a reason to skip a pond but we would rather know where they are before we dig.
How deep should the pond be?
Eight feet in the center as a default. That carries enough water to get through a Central Texas summer without going shallow and green.
Can you build a pond and a road to it?
Yes. We run dozers and excavators and we build ranch roads. Doing both on one mobilization is cheaper than two trips.
