What to Check Before Digging Around Luling

Permitting for a Luling area stock tank is usually straightforward. A landowner may impound water for livestock and domestic use on their own property without a water right, and typical ranch ponds are well below TCEQ dam safety thresholds.

The San Marcos River runs past Luling and it has mapped floodplain along it. If your site is in a flood hazard area, the county requires a development permit before earthwork. Caldwell County sits in the Guadalupe basin, so the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority can have an interest in projects near the river.

The item that is specific to this county is oil field history. There are old lines, capped wells, tank battery pads and easements across a lot of Luling area property, and some of it is not obvious from the surface. If you have plats, old surveys or a title report showing easements, we would rather look at them before we dig than find something with a bucket.

Ag and wildlife valuation goes through the Caldwell County Appraisal District.

Pond Building Around Luling

Luling ground runs to blackland clay with sandier pockets down closer to the San Marcos River. The clay side holds water without any help and the sandy pockets need us to dig down to material that will seal. Test holes sort that out in an hour.

The bigger practical issue around Luling is weather timing. Wet blackland is heavy, slow and hard on a pasture. There are weeks in the spring where the right call is to wait rather than rut up your place getting a dozer to the job. We will tell you when that is the case instead of taking the money and making a mess.

Caldwell County has old oil field history and that occasionally turns up on a job. Buried lines, old pads, capped wells. Nothing that stops a pond, but it is worth knowing where things are before we put a bucket in the ground. If you have plats or old survey records we will look at them.

The ponds we build here are mostly working tanks on grazing land off 183 and 90 and the roads out toward Prairie Lea and Ottine. Quarter acre to an acre, eight foot center depth, built to hold cattle water through an August.

What We Build Around Luling

We dig ponds on ranches, hobby farms and acreage all over the Luling area. Quarter acre stock tanks up to multi acre lakes, plus expansions and cleanouts on ponds you already have.

Stock Tanks & Ranch Ponds

Stock water that lasts a dry summer. Sized to your watershed and dug into the material that will actually seal.

Lake Excavation

Two acres and up where the drainage supports it. Built in lifts and keyed in like any dam that has to last.

Pond Cleanout & Rehab

Shallow, muddy or leaking. We clean it out, fix what the last outfit got wrong, and put the depth back.

What a Good Pond Does for a Place Out Here

Water changes what a piece of land can do. Cattle stay put instead of drifting to the neighbor. Wildlife shows up and stays. The runoff that used to leave your place stays on it. And on a hot August afternoon it is the only thing on the property anybody wants to be near.

3:1 is the steepest bank and moves the least dirt. 5:1 is a gentle wade-in bank, easier on cattle and safer around kids, but it takes more digging to get the same water.

This is an estimator, not a quote. It figures the dirt you would move for a bowl shaped pond at the size, depth and bank slope you picked. What you actually pay depends on whether we hit rock, what shape the ground is in, how far we have to haul spoil, and whether the spot needs clearing first. Rock is the big one. If we run into granite or solid limestone we have to bring a hammer out and that gets billed by the day. Call us and we will come walk it.

What Our Customers Say

★★★★★

“This is the second time using this company. And always quick responses and follow through! Their quality of work is the best in the industry. I’ve reached out to other companies before and usually slow to respond and set a date to come look at the property for a project and no show. That is something you won’t have to worry about by going with Texas Grading.”

Sean Chandler

★★★★★

“Worked with me to get my pond exactly how I wanted it. Taylor communicated well and was willing to cut me a fair deal when things weren’t exactly as expected. Jonathon is an ace with the dozer. The man can move some dirt like icing on a cake. Well done gentlemen!”

Dennis Pacl

★★★★★

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Luling ground good for a pond?

On the blackland side it is very good. Nearer the river it gets sandier and we dig down to find clay. Either way we test hole before we quote.

Late summer through winter. Spring around here can leave the ground too wet to work without tearing up the pasture, and the job takes longer and costs more when it is soupy.

It helps. Caldwell County has a lot of history under the ground. Old lines and capped wells are not a reason to skip a pond but we would rather know where they are before we dig.

Eight feet in the center as a default. That carries enough water to get through a Central Texas summer without going shallow and green.

Yes. We run dozers and excavators and we build ranch roads. Doing both on one mobilization is cheaper than two trips.
