What McLennan County Requires Before You Build
Most ponds around Crawford need no permit. A landowner can impound water for livestock and domestic use on their own property without a water right, and farm and ranch tanks sit well under TCEQ dam safety thresholds.
Floodplain along the Middle Bosque and the smaller drainages through this part of McLennan County is the main thing to check. If your site falls in a mapped flood hazard area, the county requires a development permit before earthwork begins.
McLennan County is in the Brazos basin. The Brazos River Authority has jurisdiction over some projects, though for an ordinary stock tank away from a major watercourse it is not usually a factor.
On farmed ground there is a practical item that matters more than any of that. If you are in a USDA program, taking land out of production or altering drainage can have implications for your participation. Worth a call to your local NRCS or FSA office before the work, not after.
Ag and wildlife valuation goes through the McLennan County Appraisal District.
Ponds on McLennan County Farmland Around Crawford
Crawford is farm country west of Waco, blackland and prairie soils that have grown row crops and grazed cattle for generations. That kind of ground makes good ponds. There is clay in it, it seals, and we do not put liners in around McLennan County.
The Middle Bosque drains this part of the county and the draws feeding it are where the natural pond sites are. Away from those the land is worked and fairly flat, and on flat ground the question is always whether enough water reaches the pond to keep it full. A big pond on a small watershed is a disappointment. We would rather build you a right sized tank that stays full than an oversized one that is a mud flat by July.
Because a lot of this land is farmed, access and timing matter. We work around crops and we try not to run heavy equipment across ground that is about to be planted or is too wet to take it. Tell us what the field schedule looks like and we will fit around it.
The clay here cracks in a dry summer the way blackland does everywhere. The dam gets keyed in below that layer and built in compacted lifts. It is the same discipline we use across all of our clay country work and it is what makes the difference long term.
Crawford is a longer run for us from Johnson City, so we schedule McLennan County work in groups where we can.
What We Build Around Crawford
We dig ponds on ranches, hobby farms and acreage all over the Crawford area. Quarter acre stock tanks up to multi acre lakes, plus expansions and cleanouts on ponds you already have.
Stock Tanks & Ranch Ponds
Stock water that lasts a dry summer. Sized to your watershed and dug into the material that will actually seal.
Lake Excavation
Two acres and up where the drainage supports it. Built in lifts and keyed in like any dam that has to last.
Pond Cleanout & Rehab
Shallow, muddy or leaking. We clean it out, fix what the last outfit got wrong, and put the depth back.
What a Good Pond Does for a Place Out Here
On rural acreage a pond does work before it does anything decorative. It is stock water, it is fire water, it is wildlife habitat, and it is rainfall that stays on your side of the fence. It also happens to be the thing every buyer walks straight toward.
Key Benefits Include:
- Reliable stock water in a dry year
- Water on hand for fire
- Habitat for deer, dove and turkey
- Runoff kept where it fell
- Fishing and swimming close to home
- A real bump in resale value
How We Build a Pond That Holds
Four steps. Getting the first one right is most of the work.

Find the Spot
Not the prettiest spot, the one that will hold water. Soil depth, clay and where the runoff already goes.

Set the Numbers
Surface size, center depth, bank slope, dam height and spillway capacity, all worked from your watershed and what you want the pond for.

Move the Dirt
Cut the basin, build the dam in compacted lifts keyed into solid material, and shape the banks as we go.

Walk It With You
Before the trailer leaves we go over the finished job together and fix whatever needs fixing.

Pond Cost Calculator
Slide in the size, depth and bank slope you have in mind and see roughly how much dirt has to move and what that runs. Works for anything up to 2 acres.

3:1 is the steepest bank and moves the least dirt. 5:1 is a gentle wade-in bank, easier on cattle and safer around kids, but it takes more digging to get the same water.

This is an estimator, not a quote. It figures the dirt you would move for a bowl shaped pond at the size, depth and bank slope you picked. What you actually pay depends on whether we hit rock, what shape the ground is in, how far we have to haul spoil, and whether the spot needs clearing first. Rock is the big one. If we run into granite or solid limestone we have to bring a hammer out and that gets billed by the day. Call us and we will come walk it.

What Our Customers Say
★★★★★
“This is the second time using this company. And always quick responses and follow through! Their quality of work is the best in the industry. I’ve reached out to other companies before and usually slow to respond and set a date to come look at the property for a project and no show. That is something you won’t have to worry about by going with Texas Grading.”
Sean Chandler
★★★★★
“Worked with me to get my pond exactly how I wanted it. Taylor communicated well and was willing to cut me a fair deal when things weren’t exactly as expected. Jonathon is an ace with the dozer. The man can move some dirt like icing on a cake. Well done gentlemen!”

Frequently Asked Questions
Is farmland good for a pond?
Generally yes around Crawford. The clay content is good and the ground seals. The main thing to work out is the watershed, because flat farmed ground does not always deliver much water to a low spot.
Can you work around our planting schedule?
Yes. Tell us when the field needs to be clear and we will work to it. Running equipment across ground about to be planted or too wet to carry it does nobody any favors.
What size pond should we build?
Sized to the watershed feeding it more than to the acreage you own. We will walk the drainage and tell you what will actually stay full. A right sized tank beats an oversized one every time.
Do you use liners in McLennan County?
No. The clay here seals on its own. If a pond does not hold we come back and work bentonite in, but that is uncommon on this ground.
How far out do you travel?
Crawford is near the edge of our range from Johnson City. We do go up there and we will be straight with you about what the equipment move costs.
