Roads in Paige Sand and Post Oak
Paige has the deepest sand we work in, and it is unforgiving on roads. Sand carries almost nothing on its own. Drive a loaded truck over a bladed sand road after rain and you will find out exactly how little.
Everything about building a road here comes down to getting structure underneath. We strip the loose material, shape and compact the subgrade, and then place base in lifts and compact each one. Skipping any part of that and just hauling in a load of rock is money straight in the ground, because the rock works its way into the sand and disappears.
Post oak along most routes means clearing is usually part of the job. That is fine, it is the other side of what our company does, and taking the trees out properly at the start beats squeezing a road between them and having to widen it later.
Water behaves differently here than on clay. It soaks in rather than sitting, so your enemy is scour rather than ponding. Grade breaks and frequent ditch outlets keep water from running the length of the road and cutting a channel down the middle of it.
Ranch Road and Driveway Services We Provide in Paige, TX
Professional road and driveway services that improve accessibility, connectivity, and long-term property use.
New Ranch Roads
A new road cut from scratch. Route walked first, base where the ground needs it, crown so water leaves the surface.
Road Repair and Resurfacing
Bringing an old road back. Reshape the crown, fix the drainage, add material where it has worn through.
Driveways and Entrances
The stretch you drive every day. Built to hold up under a truck and to keep the county road water out of your place.
Culverts and Low Water Crossings
Where a road meets water, the pipe or the crossing has to be sized for what actually comes through.
Cattle Guards
Installed flush with the road, set on a proper base, with approaches graded so they do not wash.
What Makes a Ranch Road Last
Almost every failed road we get called out to look at failed for one of three reasons, and none of them is the material on top.
No crown. A road graded flat holds water in the middle of it. That water soaks into the subgrade, the subgrade goes soft, and traffic pumps it into ruts. A road needs a hump down the centre so water runs off the surface within a few feet. It costs nothing extra to build and it is the single biggest thing that decides how long a road lasts.
Nowhere for the water to go. A crown only helps if there is a ditch to receive the water and somewhere for the ditch to drain. Ditches that dead end into a rise just move the problem twenty feet.
Base laid on soft ground. Hauling in material and spreading it over ground that was never stripped and compacted is money on the floor. It sinks in, gets contaminated with the mud underneath, and within a season you cannot tell it was ever there.
We build from the bottom. Strip the topsoil and organic material, shape and compact the subgrade, add base where the native ground will not carry the load, then crown and ditch. On some jobs the native material reshaped and compacted properly outperforms a cheap load of caliche dumped on top of nothing.
What Road Work Costs
Road work goes on a day rate most of the time. That covers the machine, the operator, fuel and getting equipment to your place. We price it that way because until we cut into a road route nobody knows how deep the soft ground goes or how much rock is in the way, and a contractor forced to guarantee a number on that will build the worst case into it whether it happens or not.
Where a run is measured and the scope is clear, we will bid it firm. A known length of driveway to a set width, a culvert install at a specific crossing, a cattle guard set at a fence line. Those get a number before we start.
What moves the price on a road is how much material has to be hauled in, how far it travels, whether we are cutting through rock, and how many places water crosses the route. We tell you which of those apply after we have driven it with you.
How We Complete Ranch Road Projects?

Look at the Water
The first question on any road is where water goes when it rains. Everything else follows from that.

Set the Line and Grade
Route, grade and crossings decided on the ground, with an eye on what you will be hauling over it.

Cut, Fill and Compact
Subgrade built to carry the load, with base hauled in where the native material will not hold up.

Crown, Ditch, Drive It
Finished surface crowned and ditched, then driven and checked before the equipment comes off.
Building Reliable Access Across Your Property
Strong road construction creates dependable travel routes that improve accessibility while connecting homes, work areas, equipment storage, and surrounding property features.

Getting a truck and trailer to the back of the place

Hauling hay and feed without tearing up pasture

An entrance that does not wash out at the county road

Access the fire department can actually use

Crossings that hold when the creek runs

Roads that stay usable through a wet winter

Cattle guards instead of gates to open

Access ready for whatever you build next

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you build a road that holds up in deep sand?
Yes, but not by pushing sand around. It needs a compacted subgrade and hauled base placed in lifts. Done properly it lasts. Done cheaply it is gone in a season.
Why did the last road I paid for disappear?
Almost certainly the base was spread over uncompacted sand and mixed into it. Without a prepared subgrade underneath there is nothing holding the material in place.
Do you clear the route?
Yes. Post oak along the route gets taken out as part of the job. Clearing is the other half of what our company does.
What about the entrance off the county road?
Worth building properly. It needs a culvert through the bar ditch in most cases, and it has to shed water rather than funnel the county road runoff down your drive.
How is the work priced?
Day rate on open ended road work covering machine, operator, fuel and mobilization. Fixed price on a measured run at a set width. Hauled material is quoted separately so you can see it.
