Road Building in Lampasas County

Grading and spreading gravel for a new ranch driveway near Austin, TX

The thing that decides whether a road lasts in Lampasas County is how you handle water. Sulphur Creek, the Lampasas River and every draw feeding them can move a serious volume in a short time when a storm parks over this county. We have seen more roads out here taken out by an undersized culvert than by anything wrong with how they were built.

So the design starts at the crossings. How much country drains into this draw. What happens when it comes up. Whether this should be a pipe at all or a rock low water crossing built to be driven through. Getting that right costs a little more at build time and saves the road.

The ground itself follows the usual Hill Country pattern. Soil depth down in the bottoms where roads want to run, thin over limestone up on the ridges and flats. Rock in the subgrade is free structure, rock in the way of your grade is hammer time.

Most of the road work here is on working cattle places, which means the road has to carry loaded trailers and feed trucks through a wet February, not just a pickup in July. We build the subgrade for what will actually drive on it.

Why Roads Fail and How We Build Against It

Grading and spreading gravel for a new ranch driveway near Austin, TX

We rebuild other outfits’ roads regularly, and the failures repeat themselves.

It was bladed, not built. Running a blade over the ground and calling it a road gives you something that looks right for one dry season. There is no compacted subgrade under it and no shape to shed water, so the first wet spell turns it into a trough.

The crown was never cut, or it got graded away. Water has to leave the driving surface. If it stands there, it goes down into the subgrade, and everything above that point comes apart. A proper crown moves water off in a few feet.

The culvert was too small, or there was not one. Every place a road crosses a draw is a decision. Undersized pipe backs water up and takes the road out beside it. We size pipe to the ground draining into it.

The way we build against all three is to start underneath. Strip, shape and compact the subgrade first. Add base material only where the native ground genuinely will not carry the traffic. Then crown the surface, cut ditches that go somewhere, and set pipe where water crosses.

Straight Pricing on Road Work

We charge a day rate for most road building, covering machine, operator, fuel and getting there. Roads have more unknowns in them than almost anything else we do, because you cannot see the subgrade until you open it and you do not know how much pipe you need until you have walked every draw.

Defined work gets a fixed number. A measured stretch of driveway, a specific crossing, a cattle guard. Those we can quote before the trailer rolls.

Four things swing the cost of a road. How much material has to come in, how far it hauls, whether there is rock in the way, and how many times the route crosses water. We name whichever apply to your job before we start, not on the invoice.

Rough grading step icon

We Cut and Base It

Topsoil stripped, subgrade shaped and compacted, then base material where the ground will not carry a load on its own.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you size a culvert?

By the amount of country draining into the crossing. Out here that can be a lot, and undersizing it is the most common reason a road fails in this county. We look at the watershed above the crossing before deciding.

When the draw runs often enough or carries enough volume that no reasonable pipe would handle it. A rock crossing built to be driven over, and occasionally driven through, holds up where a culvert would blow out.

It will if we build the subgrade for it. Tell us what you are hauling. A road built for a pickup will not stand up to a feed truck in a wet week.

Yes, and the fix has to address why. Usually the crossing was too small or the water had nowhere to go. Rebuilding it the same way just buys you another year.

About an hour and fifteen from Johnson City. We run 281 north regularly and try to group Lampasas County work together to keep the equipment move reasonable.
