What We Actually Do

Road Construction Process

Everything on this site comes down to moving dirt and deciding where water goes. Those two things run through all five of the services below, which is why most of our jobs end up being a combination of them rather than just one.

A new homesite is usually clearing, then a pad, then a road in, and often a pond while the equipment is already on the place. A pasture that will not drain is a grading job. A barn that needs to come down is demolition and haul off, and then the ground under it becomes a pad.

We would rather look at the whole picture on the first visit than quote one piece of it and come back three times. Moving equipment is a real cost, and doing it once is cheaper for you than doing it three times.

Most work is priced as a day rate covering the machine, the operator, fuel and getting to your place. Where a scope is defined and measurable we bid it firm. We tell you which before we start.

Why Roads Fail and How We Build Against It

Road Construction Process

We rebuild other outfits’ roads regularly, and the failures repeat themselves.

It was bladed, not built. Running a blade over the ground and calling it a road gives you something that looks right for one dry season. There is no compacted subgrade under it and no shape to shed water, so the first wet spell turns it into a trough.

The crown was never cut, or it got graded away. Water has to leave the driving surface. If it stands there, it goes down into the subgrade, and everything above that point comes apart. A proper crown moves water off in a few feet.

The culvert was too small, or there was not one. Every place a road crosses a draw is a decision. Undersized pipe backs water up and takes the road out beside it. We size pipe to the ground draining into it.

The way we build against all three is to start underneath. Strip, shape and compact the subgrade first. Add base material only where the native ground genuinely will not carry the traffic. Then crown the surface, cut ditches that go somewhere, and set pipe where water crosses.

Straight Pricing on Road Work

Road Construction Process

We charge a day rate for most road building, covering machine, operator, fuel and getting there. Roads have more unknowns in them than almost anything else we do, because you cannot see the subgrade until you open it and you do not know how much pipe you need until you have walked every draw.

Defined work gets a fixed number. A measured stretch of driveway, a specific crossing, a cattle guard. Those we can quote before the trailer rolls.

Four things swing the cost of a road. How much material has to come in, how far it hauls, whether there is rock in the way, and how many times the route crosses water. We name whichever apply to your job before we start, not on the invoice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you do all of this in house?

The dirt work, yes. We run our own bulldozers and excavators and our own operators. There are times we rent a specific machine or bring in a sub for part of a job, and if that applies to yours we will say so.

That is normally how it works and it is cheaper for you. Clearing, a pad, a road and a pond on one mobilization costs far less than four separate trips.

Day rate on open ended dirt work, covering machine, operator, fuel and getting to you. Fixed price where the scope is defined and measurable. You know which one before we start.
