Ranch Roads Around Bertram
Bertram sits on some of the better ground in Burnet County for road building. There is real soil depth through a lot of the country north and east of town, and caliche pits are close. Both of those work in your favour, because on a road job the hauling is often a bigger cost than the machine time.
Where soil is deep, though, you cannot skip the subgrade work. Deep soil means the ground under the road compresses if it was never stripped and compacted, and a load of material spread on soft ground disappears into it. The stripping and compaction step is what makes the difference between a road that holds and one that ruts.
West of town the limestone comes up and it changes the job. Solid subgrade, but rock if the grade has to come down. We drive the route and cut test holes rather than guessing from the gate.
Highway 29 has brought more traffic and more subdividing through here, and county road entrances matter. An entrance that dumps its water onto the county road, or that catches the county road runoff and funnels it down your drive, will cause problems. We build the entrance to handle that.

Potholes, ruts and soft spots fixed at the cause rather than filled in and forgotten.
Driveways and Entrances
Entrance off the county road, culvert if the ditch needs one, and a surface that holds up to daily use.
Culverts and Low Water Crossings
Pipe and rock crossings sized for the watershed above them, not for an average rain.
Cattle Guards
Set into the road at a fence line, level and stable, with the approaches built to stay put.
Why Roads Fail and How We Build Against It
We rebuild other outfits’ roads regularly, and the failures repeat themselves.
It was bladed, not built. Running a blade over the ground and calling it a road gives you something that looks right for one dry season. There is no compacted subgrade under it and no shape to shed water, so the first wet spell turns it into a trough.
The crown was never cut, or it got graded away. Water has to leave the driving surface. If it stands there, it goes down into the subgrade, and everything above that point comes apart. A proper crown moves water off in a few feet.
The culvert was too small, or there was not one. Every place a road crosses a draw is a decision. Undersized pipe backs water up and takes the road out beside it. We size pipe to the ground draining into it.
The way we build against all three is to start underneath. Strip, shape and compact the subgrade first. Add base material only where the native ground genuinely will not carry the traffic. Then crown the surface, cut ditches that go somewhere, and set pipe where water crosses.
Straight Pricing on Road Work
We charge a day rate for most road building, covering machine, operator, fuel and getting there. Roads have more unknowns in them than almost anything else we do, because you cannot see the subgrade until you open it and you do not know how much pipe you need until you have walked every draw.
Defined work gets a fixed number. A measured stretch of driveway, a specific crossing, a cattle guard. Those we can quote before the trailer rolls.
Four things swing the cost of a road. How much material has to come in, how far it hauls, whether there is rock in the way, and how many times the route crosses water. We name whichever apply to your job before we start, not on the invoice.
Our Ranch Road Construction Process

On the Ground First
We come out and see it. Grade, soil, draws and how you plan to use the road all change how it gets built.

Decide Where Water Goes
Ditches, culverts and crown planned together. A road without a drainage plan is a ditch waiting to happen.

Build It From the Bottom
Subgrade shaped and compacted first, base added where it earns its keep, all placed in lifts.

Finish and Walk It
Crowned, ditched, approaches tied in, and gone over with you before we pull off.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the ground around Bertram good for a road?
Generally yes, especially north and east of town. Deep soil and close caliche both help. It does mean the subgrade has to be stripped and compacted properly, because soft ground under a road will swallow whatever you put on top.
How much material will my road need?
Depends on the ground and what will drive on it. On good subgrade sometimes very little. On soft ground more. We tell you after we have looked at the route, not before.
Can you build the entrance off the county road?
Yes. That entrance is worth getting right. It has to shed its own water and keep the county road runoff out of your drive, and it usually needs a culvert through the bar ditch.
Do you set cattle guards?
Yes, flush with the surface on a proper base, with approaches graded so nothing washes out at the edges.
Can you build a road and a pad on one trip?
Yes, and it is cheaper that way. Moving equipment twice costs real money, so tell us everything you want done and we will schedule it as one job.
