Why Shallow Ponds Fail in Texas

Evaporation. Open water in a Central Texas summer loses a serious amount of depth to evaporation alone, before anything drinks out of it. A pond that is four foot deep in May can be gone by September in a dry year. A pond that is eight foot deep in the middle still has water.

Heat. Shallow water heats through, which kills fish, drives algae blooms and turns the pond green and smelly. Depth gives you a cooler layer at the bottom that stays livable.

Weeds. Cattails and rooted vegetation colonize shallow water. A pond with steep-enough banks and real depth keeps the vegetated ring narrow. A shallow one turns into a marsh from the edges in.

Why Eight Foot

Eight foot at the center is deep enough to hold a meaningful reserve through a bad summer, deep enough to keep a cool layer for fish, and shallow enough that you are not paying for dirt you do not need.

It is also a practical excavation depth on most Central Texas sites before you start running into rock, which matters a lot west of I-35.

Deeper is better if the site supports it. The good news is that depth gets cheaper at the margin. Going from eight to sixteen foot on a one acre pond adds roughly 47 percent to the cost, not double, because past a point you are only deepening the middle while the banks stay where they are.

When to Go Deeper Than Eight

If you want fish. Bass and catfish do better with ten to twelve foot of water somewhere in the pond, giving them a cool refuge in August.

If your watershed is marginal. A deeper, smaller pond holds better than a wide shallow one with the same volume, because there is less surface area exposed to evaporation. If the drainage feeding your site is limited, build down rather than out.

If you are in a drought-prone spot or the pond is your only reliable water for stock.

The main limit is rock. On a lot of Hill Country sites, eight foot is what you get before the hammer comes out.

Depth and Bank Slope Work Together

Center depth is only half the picture. Bank slope decides how much of the pond is actually deep versus how much is shallow shelf.

A 3:1 bank drops one foot for every three across, so it reaches depth quickly and gives you more deep water for a given surface area. A 5:1 bank is a gentle wade-in, safer for cattle and kids, but it eats a lot of the footprint getting down.

Most ranch ponds around here land on 3:1 or 4:1. If cattle are the main users we often go gentler on the approach side and steeper elsewhere.

This is an estimator, not a quote. It figures the dirt you would move for a bowl shaped pond at the size, depth and bank slope you picked. What you actually pay depends on whether we hit rock, what shape the ground is in, how far we have to haul spoil, and whether the spot needs clearing first. Rock is the big one. The calculator treats your pond as a bowl. It takes the surface size you pick, figures the radius, pulls the banks in at the slope you chose, and works out the volume between the top edge and the bottom. That gives the cubic yards of dirt that have to come out, which is the biggest single thing driving what a pond costs.

Bigger ponds cost less per yard. Getting equipment out to your place, setting up and tearing down costs about the same whether we move 2,000 yards or 20,000. So the rate per cubic yard drops as the job gets bigger. A small pond runs toward the top of our rate, and a one acre job comes in around a third of that per yard. The calculator does that math for you and shows the rate it landed on.

Why bank slope changes the price. A 3:1 bank drops one foot for every three feet across. A 5:1 drops one foot for every five. The gentler you make it, the more dirt has to move to get the same depth, but you get a safer wade-in edge for cattle and a shoreline that will not slough off on you. Most ranch ponds around here end up 3:1 or 4:1.
